ABOUT THE PLAY
The novel for children ˝You’re lying, Melita˝ was published in 1965 and ever since reedited many times, becoming one of absolute literary favourites to all primary school students in Croatia and other countries, too. The national and international popularity of the novel was additionally increased by a series of the same title in the Eighties which reached a cult status. Many stage adaptations were also successful and this one is the first performance on the stage in Split.
Although more than 50 years passed since the first edition, the novel ˝You’re lying, Melita˝ is still fresh, modern and convincing, close to every new generation, and rightfully called a modern classic. The girl Melita drives her parents, her brother and friends mad with her wild imagation. She keeps adding and reshaping events that really occured and imagines new ones. When once her mother leaves town, also due to somebody’s little lie, dad and brother plan a conspiracy that will teach her a lesson on her imaginings.
Kušan presents universal attributes of human nature and the charateristics of children’s maturing. He discloses the problem of a child’s exaggeration and apparently harmless little lies of adults, probing for the key border line between imagination and lying, between socially more acceptable white lies and those real ones which can do a lot of harm.
