ABOUT THE PLAY
What is the animal side in humans and what the human side in animals? To what extent are we truly free and how much can we ‘learn’ from animals about freedom and living altogether?
It is these questions that the performance of the ‘White Deer’ sets out to answer. Based on the motifs of one of the most beautiful fairy tales by Vladimir Nazor, the show does not convey a banal moral lesson but rather offers the possibility of theatrical research. The outcome of it is the idea that the animal world differs from the human world on a physical and an inner (emotional) level.
The little girl Anka finds her protection and freedom in the forest; the forest raises her and it is what Anka has to part with in the end. The forest is the metaphor of her childhood, that is, childhood as such. However, each child has to grow up and leave the secure nest and take along only that emotional and free spirit of the forest. She creates her white deer, a metaphor of childhood and innocence she has to eventually part with, become a young woman and return to the world of humans. Living through this singular adventure, Anka will realize that freedom has many faces. That is exactly what she would learn from animals themselves.
